Black Widow’s first appearance in the MCU was in Iron Man 2. However what got fans interested was her involvement in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the fans have been wanting a movie for the character ever since. With each appearance, she has made this excitement for a standalone film grows stronger and louder. Marvel has a lot of positives to their MCU movies, but diversity is lacking. Black Panther will help regarding diversity for standalone superhero movies for Marvel, but we all know that a great female hero film needs to be made soon. DC struck gold with the success of Wonder Woman after so many horrible attempts in the last couple of years. Now it is a Marvel’s turn, and it might be coming sooner than we thought.
The latest update gives a hint that Black Widow could be getting her own movie. Since the movies are all planned for next year, the possibility of seeing this movie could come 2020 after this current phase of the MCU. Everything is already planned out for releases next year, and with the current phase wrapping up, it is best to say we will be waiting at least two years before we get to see anything from this project.
Variety reported that the project is not greenlit, but Jac Schaeffer has been hired as a screenwriter. Jac’s previous experience in movies has been small with a few short projects that have been made in the past few years such as Olaf’s Frozen Adventure. A foot in Disney is probably how this came about for Jac to be the screenwriter for this possible standalone movie. It is reported that Johansson and Schaeffer will meet to discuss ideas for the project. Scarlett Johansson has previously voiced how she feels about the character and where she wants to go with the spy hero, so it is great to hear that she is still invested in doing movies for Marvel.
A lot of discussions is going around about some of the actors in the MCU who’s contracts are potentially running out and not going to be resigned. This is mostly coming from potential deaths in Avengers: Infinity War. However, Johansson’s contract is coming to an end soon. With this news about her standalone movie, she has either resigned another contract or Marvel are wanting her to sign another as quickly as possible. With her enthusiasm for her character, it is safe to say that she will be signing another contract for a few more movies.
The possibilities for Black Widow are pretty vast as she gets her standalone film and possible sequels. Her troubled past has been discussed in some of the previous movies and her relationship with Hawkeye can also be explored. On top of this, there is plenty of rich material to dive into from the comics. Her character is not as known as Captain America or Iron Man so giving the audience a more in-depth look into her past or future can hold many pleasant surprises for noncomic book readers.
We will be seeing her soon this May in Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel that comes next year. The standalone project might be a while, but in the meantime, there is plenty of time to develop the character more with these two movies.
