Best and Worst Moments of San Diego Comic-Con 2018

San Diego Comic-Con is a massive event for nerds around the world. We get news, trailers, and so much more on our favorite comics, movies, video games, and TV shows. Every year is full of amazing trailers or news about upcoming projects that are new or continuing that people have been following for years. This year is full of excitement, along with some duds. Let’s take a look at the best and worst moments of SDCC.

BEST:

#1. Shazam! Debut Trailer

The DCEU has had some issues to put it lightly. Every is panned by critics and fans alike, with the exception of Wonder Woman. We finally got a look at the long-awaited Shazam! starring Chuck star Zachary Levi as the red-suited hero. Since I never knew much of the character along with DC’s latest track record, I was dismissive. After seeing the trailer I can say that I am pleasantly surprised by how good it looks. I am still worried, the humor might be too much. At least DC is taking note from fans and critics by making a movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Zachary Levi looks as charming as ever as this man-child hero. We will see April 5, 2019, if this can help recover the mess DC has made, or dig the hole deeper.

#2: Godzilla: King of the Monsters Trailer

2014’s Godzilla was underwhelming. What made me enjoy it the most was that I got a new Godzilla movie. Sadly, we got a movie with too much time spent on bland human characters, marketing that centered around Bryan Cranston who was killed off early on in the film, and a lack of our beloved monster, Godzilla. The new film has an original cast of human characters such as Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones). With a stacked cast I just hope they don’t make them bland and pointless, it will be heartbreaking to see such wasted talent. The trailer shows a lot of these human characters while showing what we want to see, destruction and monsters. Godzilla has his hands full with Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. If the film can fix the issues from the first movie by not having such terrible human characters, plot holes, and a balance of the drama and action then this will be a major highlight of 2019.

#3: Deadpool 2: The Super Duper Cut

If you loved Deadpool 2 then don’t worry the blue ray will have an extended cut full of more jokes and violence. Co-writer Rhett Reese described this version as “significantly different… and fun!” The fun is to be expected, but different? It should bring a new experience to die-hard fans, what will we see? The usual bloopers and scenes that were cut will be featured. That is not all, we are expecting additions to the already superb after credit scenes and to get some commentary from Reynolds and the writers of the film. There is no release date yet, but we shouldn’t have to wait too long. You can pre-order the extended version below:

#4: Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus! Teaser

Nickelodeon is bringing back their old classics for either a new series or TV specials. My personal favorite from their early catalog is Invader Zim. We recently got a teaser that does not tell us much about the story or what to expect, but it is everything fans of the show wanted. Full of weird and dark imagery of our favorite characters in utter chaos. If they manage to keep the weirdness, humor, and the heart of the show in this 90-minute special then all will go perfectly well. There is no release date yet, but hopefully, we get more information soon.

#5: Spider-Man PS4 Story Trailer

We got a glimpse at the story with the new trailer of Insomniac’s upcoming Spider-Man game. The trailer shows Miles Morales and MJ trying to help Spidey through the difficult situation he has found himself in. Mayor Osborn has a vendetta against any superbeings in New York, that not only includes baddies such as Mr. Negative and Rhino but Spider-Man too. Silver Sable is announced to be apart of the already large cast of Spider-Man characters. Along with we got the announcement that Laura Bailey (Uncharted) is the voice actress of MJ. Finally, we got to see the PS4 Pro addition for the game. A beautiful red console and controller with a big white spider on the PS4, it looks gorgeous. Spider-Man comes out September 7, 2018.

WORST:

#1. Aquaman Trailer

After the internet made fun of the poster for the upcoming Aquaman movie, we finally got to see the trailer. While some parts are cool, it felt all over the place. DC released a good trailer for Shazam! which got me excited to see the trailer for Jason Momoa’s Aquaman. A trailer full of underwhelming special effects, chaotic storytelling from his origin, the villain, his allies, and so much more. A massive wave of information that felt cluttered and not focused. The humor did not feel right unlike the humor in the Shazam! trailer. The special effects looked inconsistent and not complete. Hopefully, all goes well, but my expectations are set beyond low.

#2: Titans Trailer

If you read my impressions of this gritty take on these heroes, then you know how pathetic I think Titans looks. Terribly cheesy dialog and acting, characters not acting like themselves such as Robin killing thugs then saying “Fuck Batman,” and so much more. The trailer is laughable and should add to the already massive pile of waste that DC has produced.

#3: The Purge TV Series Trailer

Yes, The Purge is getting a ten episode tv series on USA. Why? Nobody knows why. A series that repeats the same premise over and over with slight changes, but always dull is not going to make it work on network television. If the show managed to get on HBO or Showtime then maybe it will work. However, a lot of violence, language, and themes will have to be cut short for them to work on USA. The trailer looks as you expect if you have seen any of the trailers for any of the movies. The series will premier on September 4 on USA.

I know a lot has happened during SDCC, but these are just some of the best and worst trailers and news that we got. Overall we got a good year despite some of the bad trailers. What did you think was the best parts of SDCC or the worst? Be sure to comment below on what you thought of the convention.
